The Evolution of Intelligent Design in America Today
1989 - "Of Pandas and People: The Central Question of Biological Origins" -
The first intelligent design textbook available to public schools was published.
It submitted that the origin of new organisms has "an immaterial cause:
in a blueprint, a plan, a pattern, devised by an intelligent agent".
1991 - "Darwin on Trial" The "Father of Intelligent Design" -
Philip E. Johnson, publishes what is now considered the central book of the Intelligent
Design movement.
1996 - "Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution" -
Published in 1996, Michael Behe introduces the theory of irreducible complexity,
which soon becomes the scientific stronghold of intelligent design proponents.
1998 - The Wedge Strategy - The Discovery Institute drafts a political and social
plan to "replace materialistic explanations with the theistic understanding
that nature and human beings are created by God". This movement is responsible
for the Santorum Amendment, the Kansas evolution hearings and Ohio's "Critical
Analysis of Evolution" lesson plan.
2007 - Creation Museum - a 60,000 square foot museum opened in Petersburg, Kentucky
that is devoted to teaching Young Earth Creationism.
2008 - "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" - A controversial 2008 documentary
opened in April that promotes intelligent design and demonizes the nature of "Big
Science" and evolution.
2008 - "Religulous" - Another controversial documentary is planned
to open in October. In this film, Bill Maher scrutinizes organized religion and
the establishment of churches.
2008 - Spore - A video game that is to be released in late 2008, it allows the player to control the evolution of a species from the beginning as a single-celled organism, to a functioning living creature, then developing social interaction and civilizations, and finally exploring and colonizing space.
